Will Luxury and Super Sports Cars become Consumer Electronics?

  • Topic: Electric Vehicle Market, Strategy & Marketing, Supercars Future

Even though Evs have been around for a while now, it's just in the last two years that every major automaker started a proper race to catch up with Tesla and possibly outrun the rest of the competition.

And while initial forecasts predicted that EVs would have taken a fairly long time to surpass ICE cars, by looking at the current market development, the story could be different. The main drivers of the change are the so-called ACES standing for autonomous driving, connectivity, electrification, and shared mobility. A sign of this drastic shift is the number of tech companies, involved mostly in software and consumer electronics development that are entering the space:

brands in ev market*Major names in the Tech world entering the Electric vehicle market

This is reflected in online communication as well. Social media personalities involved in technology are giving more and more attention to electric mobility as well. There is a convergence of interests for tech enthusiasts in EVs and automakers too are involving more influencers from this side of the market.

One above all, the recent partnership between Marques Brownlee (one of the most followed and respected YouTube personalities in the tech world) and Top Gear, for the review of electric vehicles. But there are many more.

youtuber*YouTube largest Tech Reviewers Video previews related to electric mobility and electric cars reviews

This indicates a clear change in the perception of a car's value. So, where does the car stop and the digital tool begin?

Consumers' preferences are changing, software and electronic integrations are gaining importance and automakers know that. In 2020, 40% of the average cost of a vehicle was spent on electronics, up from 2010's 27%, and is projected to reach 45% by 2030 (Deloitte). Also, according to McKinsey in this decade the automotive market will experience a CAGR of 7%, from $238 billion in 2020 to $469 in 2030, with Power Electronics, Integrations services, and software above it with a CAGR of 15%, 10%, and 9% respectively.

The software side is becoming increasingly important in everyday use. This affects the luxury and performance automotive niche too where there has been a clear trend toward cars more suited for every-day use by every luxury and sports car manufacturer.

But it also represents a more substantial differentiation between super sports cars and pure luxury cars (or even lower segments for that matter). Luckily, for some manufacturers, the focus on the driving experience is something that plays more into the strengths and expertise they accumulated for decades, while digitisation, autonomous driving, and electrification are big equalisers, which lower the entry barriers for the huge number of start-ups coming to the market every day lately. In fact, among the companies developing connected services and cybersecurity, 44% have been established in the last 20 years, while those working with ADAS have grown by 38% in just ten years. The US and China thanks to their large investments and powerful tech industrial clusters account for the larger share of this industry respectively with 34 and 28%.

RISKS FOR LUXURY AUTOMAKERS

This standardisation process can become an even bigger problem for premium and luxury automakers for obvious reasons. The increase in shared components, and especially electronics and software like it happens in big automotive groups could tarnish a brand's exclusivity.

In the lower market segment, someone that is avoiding this to a certain extent is Tesla. Not only creating every part in-house separates it from the rest of the market, but mostly having its own ecosystem does. Tesla has employed a strong vertical integration. Something that is not easy to replicate now that the EV market is already growing at a fast pace at least for high-volume automakers.

For low-volume productions, though this might be different. The example here is Rimac that has developed a similar strategyin the EV world. Ultimately this paired with its proprietary technology are the major characteristics that turned the Croatian company into the success it is today, at least from a technological standpoint (and likely in automotive too very soon). Among low-volume luxury automakers, Swedish Koenigsegg too adopts the same integration. As ACES level the playing field, higher integration, and in-house development could be the key for sustained and long-term brand strength.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

Standardisation will increase in software development as well. Much like it happened for computers and mobile technology, initially, every company developed its own system. However, as the industry consolidates, competitors are going to disappear and only a few (or very few) players will remain. In this context, tech companies and software developers such as Google, or Chinese giants Tencent for example will have a significant advantage over their automotive counterparts. Volvo and Geely subsidiary Polestar has already done that step integrating Google infotainment and OS.

Also due to the increasing complexity and need for cross-system integrations, automakers will have to establish special partnerships with Software developers to implement these systems properly (McKinsey). This would give the suppliers higher bargaining power, and the standardisation of software could become an issue for luxury automakers that need to distinguish themselves and the driving experience offered from that of others.

WHAT ABOUT SPORTS CARS

Regarding sports cars and super sports cars, with the focus remaining on the driving experience, most ACES factors are likely to have less of an impact on the segment. But not all. Electrification in fact is already having a big impact on the industry and on new generations of potential clients. Performances that already reached small incremental improvements in the last years are making a significant jump with electrification (at least in some contexts) and could soon reach a limit, if not of what is physically possible, at least the limit for what the average human being can handle. While the top-of-the-line ICE super sports cars and hybrids reached accelerations varying between 2.8 and 2.5 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph), it is not uncommon to see super electric vehicles claimed acceleration market below 2 seconds.

car acceleration speed*Speed expressed in seconds

Again, Rimac made the headlines a few days ago with the release of the production-ready version of its C_Two, now called Nevera, clocking record acceleration speeds with 0-62 in 2 seconds or less, and a quarter-mile in less than 9 seconds.

As of now, the instant torque and excessive straight-line speed of electric vehicles represent a novelty. But this kind of competition is not likely to last. Due to the (relative) ease with which automakers achieve such stunning performance numbers with EVs, the competition will either go onto something more complex, like a full lap time (something that already happens among long-standing automakers) or simply lose its appeal. If this happens, we will see the competition transforming into something completely new.

The change is happening extremely fast. Autonomous driving, connectivity, electrification, and shared mobility are transforming the automotive industry for good. Cars will increasingly become consumer electronics. But where does this leave the luxury and performance niches?

These companies will have to come up with strategies to differentiate themselves against the overall standardisation that seems to be developing. This will have to include the vehicles’ value proposition, whether it is the driving experience, the performance, or the luxury.

While some core strengths of these traditional OEMs might lose importance, others should stay. Additionally, the higher technological and digital integrations offer also relevant opportunities. Automakers have the chance to create more comprehensive, involving, and seamless ecosystems to attract customers and improve brand loyalty. Connectivity and software development offer countless possibilities to create services, build communities and a sense of belonging, making the car ownership an experience more than ever before.

The Next Step for Luxury Car Ownership: An Interview with Supercar Capsule Founder Andrea Sensoli

  • Topic: Interview, Strategy & Marketing, Supercars Future

I have discussed before about how automotive companies nowadays develop extremely complex customer journeys to promote brand loyalty as the competition in the market gets fiercer and just building beautiful and fast cars is not sufficient anymore.

Customer-centricity is crucial in the modern luxury market where brands are not just setting trends for their customer base to follow but are expected to offer a deeper and well-rounded brand experience coming along with the product. Every company becomes a services company too, and this is especially true in the Luxury Automotive Industry. The complementary services are conceived almost as a ‘reward’ for entering that brand’s family.

In luxury automotive, this translates into extensive marketing mixes that include higher levels of personalisation with virtually endless possibilities, events, and increasingly sophisticated and immersive digital services.

But there is something new coming to enrich the entire supercar (or hypercar, or classic car) ownership experience, and this time it does not come from an automaker, but from an architecture and design company.

capsule tower article

SUPERCAR CAPSULE

Supercar Capsule is the latest venture born from the mind of Andrea Sensoli and his partners. Already the founder of two successful architecture firms ASZ Architetti and Superfuture Design, Andrea has brought his expertise in the luxury market into a new and very specialised niche.  Garages and Boxes for supercars.

However, these two terms, do not make justice to what Supercar Capsule realises and might look almost offensive because what these Italian Designers realise is closer to a proper art gallery or a stylish lounge than a simple storage area for cars.

At Supercar Capsule these spaces become highly bespoke display areas that do not serve just to showcase the parked car but can be whatever the client wants. A place to spend some leisure time with friends, to have fun, or indulge in some personal passion along with the one for fast and expensive cars of course.

The Supercar Capsule concept adds a completely new dimension to the Luxury Car ownership experience.

And there is more.

The level of refinement, research, and technology packed into this project are seriously remarkable, and I was lucky enough to have a chat with Andrea about his project, his experience so far, and his projects for the future. Check the full video of our interview below:

SOME CONSIDERATIONS

The automotive industry is at a crossroads and in the span of a few years is changing like it never has for almost 100. Electrification, autonomous driving, and digitalisation are the most important trends right now, and the overall direction of the market is clear by looking at the amount and industry of provenance of the companies trying to enter the renewed automotive businessor have at least teased an upcoming electric vehicle. I am talking about Apple, Baidu, Foxconn, Huawei, LG, Sony, and Xiaomi to name a few.

Tech companies are taking over the automotive business, and there is a clear indication that very soon, software and connectivity could be the most relevant factors in the purchase decision.

According to a report by Bloomberg, three Chinese companies alone Baidu, Huawei, and Xiaomi are investing $19 billion in R&D on electrification and self-driving technology. Also, with a government extremely determined to dominate this new wave, at least in the domestic region, literally hundreds of companies are competing for a position in the largest car market in the world.

However, the luxury industry has and will continue to have some core differences from the wider market. The first-hand experience is surely one. So, despite the focus on the Internet of Things, and tech in general, a high degree of attention to a more personal experience will most likely remain of primary importance in luxury automotive. And here comes Supercar Capsule with its unique project.

BUSINESS AND POTENTIAL

Supercar capsule is a niche product from people that know very well whom they are talking to. They know the audience and understand the added value of their work. Unsurprisingly, it is in many ways remarkably close to that of the numerous additional services promoted by luxury automakers in the last few years.

Instead of focusing on the product itself, the attention is on the experience and how the capsule or the special projects mentioned by Andrea in the interview enrich the ownership experience. And again, much like in high-end automotive, the customer journey for this turnkey project starts even earlier with the wide range of options and high-tech features described, as highlighted in the firm’s value proposition chart.

The tailor-made experience is, of course, recognised as a strength in the company’s SWOT analysis and definitely one of the most important.

advantages

supercar capsule SWOT*Tables bySupercar Capsule

Regarding the opportunities, another external factor is represented by the limited market size for this kind of product. The small numbers give more power to the clients, which are already an extremely demanding crowd, as described by Andrea, but potentially strengthens also tools like the word of mouth and through that brand loyalty as well.

Many automakers are more vertically integrated than ever, and their marketing programs extend in every phase of the customer journey. From the initial specification down to the numerous after-sales services. An idea like the Supercar Capsule, enriching the whole ‘man cave’ side of the experience (as it is commonly referred to) is the perfect complement for the other services usually provided almost exclusively by the automakers selling the car in the first place. And this is even more important in the age of social media where wealthy car owners and collectors often become proper internet personalities.

The capsule and special projects described add the missing piece in the car ownership experience that is already so refined in many other aspects and opens also unprecedented new opportunities for future developments. With electrification, AI, and IoT, the cars which are increasingly connected could become even more integrated with the capsules’ advanced technology making the whole experience richer and more seamless.

013 01

As Andrea specified, their projects now are so personalised that it is difficult to think about scaling the numbers up, with the contributing factor of the company being very new. So, the capsules are currently aimed at proper collectors. The ones that normally own several (£ million plus) extremely limited editions. However, it is not difficult to imagine the potential of a more standardised concept that strikes the right balance between efficiency and customisation.

Could the capsule, and the time spent with the car at home become the next addition to the already highly articulated marketing mixes of high-end car manufacturers? After all, they are a perfect expression of the direction in the modern luxury market.

Lamborghini Reaches for the Stars with Stephan Winkelmann: Direzione Cor Tauri

  • Brand: Lamborghini
  • Topic: Strategy & Marketing

Just yesterday, on May 18th, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann announced the company’s strategy for its electrified future under the evocative name ‘Direzione Cor Tauri’ (Heart of the Bull in Latin) and using the Taurus constellation’s brightest star, Aldebaran, as the symbolic representation of the company ‘Reaching for the stars’.

cor tauri stephan winkelmann*SourceLamborghini Media

The whole announcement revolved around a few main points. Unsurprisingly, all the new objectives stem from the need to set a clear path for the company to tackle effectively the increasingly restrictive regulations for CO2 emission reduction. This is certainly the biggest challenge for any traditional automaker today.

Lamborghini follows a general trend under which more companies are adopting new plans to achieve the required results in terms of sustainability and cater to the upcoming generation of potential clients who are more and more interested in electric vehicles. From Bentley’s Beyond100 to Porsche’s Strategy 2025 and Ferrari’s latest announcement by CEO John Elkann.

Clearly, all the companies under the VW umbrella are quickly moving in a similar direction to catch up with the competition from electric manufacturers and leave behind those traditional automakers still lagging. The German group claimed it will spend €73 billion over the next 5 years in R&D, with around half spent on BEV development, a further 37% for car digitisation and software capabilities development, and the remaining 15% for existing models hybridisation.

WHAT ABOUT THE REGULATIONS

The measures taken by luxury automotive manufacturers are in response to the increasingly restrictive environmental regulations. The Euro 1 standard introduced in 1992 has been updated around every 5 years up until now with the standing Euro 6 standards.

Euro standards table 150612 e14340995627871*SourceSMMT

These regulations have been further updated in 2019 and 2021, to reduce discrepancies between the laboratory emission testing WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) introduced in 2017, and the RDE (Real Driving Emission) arrived later. Where the initial deviation allowed was 110%, this has now been reduced to 43%. Also, new standards Euro 7 should come into force in 2025. This is the major driver for the fleet emission reduction programmed by Lamborghini in the near future as described below.

REACHING FOR THE STARS

So, let’s have a closer look at what points have been made for Lamborghini’s New Business Strategy.

1. A new group of customers

According to Mr. Winkelmann’s claim and as seen in similar announcements by other companies, these plans being shaped serve not only to comply with regulations but to capture an audience that is ever more aware and attentive toward environmental issues. A survey conducted a while back among sports car and luxury car owners clearly highlighted a higher acceptance of electric powertrains both in regular and luxury vehicles.

More automakers are rightfully betting on this growing generation to cover a new segment of the market that will most likely be composed of electrified and connected vehicles, while still remaining (at least to some degrees) truthful to their tradition.

2. Finding the right Balance

The regulations imposing emission reductions are forcing sports car manufacturers to go electric. But the current battery technology poses the risk of excessive weight. The new challenge then is to find the perfect balance between higher torque and power achievable through an electric, o hybrid powertrain while limiting the car weight.

We already have significantly different interpretations of this development like the few listed below:

DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO EV DEVELOPMENT - RIMAC C_TWO AND LOTUS EVIJA

comparison ev models

One example is Lotus's interpretation of an electric powertrain with the Evija. Quite different from its competitors as it features a significantly smaller battery pack to achieve a much lighter package overall. The company’s focus was to deliver the best driving experience possible, as close as that of an ICE Lotus as possible. Despite the slower 0-100 kmh, when compared with many modern competitors then, the Evija's strongest feature should be in fact its ability to reach 300 kmh in just 9 seconds. Will the nearly 350 km of range claimed for the Evija be enough for the average client? Only time will tell who got the best interpretation of their clients’ desires.

A similar situation is found with hybrid powertrains as well, where Lamborghini is the one that stands out. While Ferrari and McLaren present differences in weight, power, speed, and EV range, which are likely dictated by their vehicles positioning (Artura is an entry-level model, while SF90 is a flagship one), Lamborghini is the only one to use Supercapacitors. A solution that allowed the company to give the car an electrical boost with a much higher power density at just a fraction of the weight of a lithium-ion battery.

DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO ELECTRIFICATION IN HYBRID POWERTRAINS - FERRARI SF90 STRADALE, LAMBORGHINI SIÀN, MCLAREN ARTURA

hybrid cars table*Lamborghini has not disclosed the Siàn exact weight figure. The data is derived from the claimed power/weight ratio

It is not clear whether Lamborghini will use again this technology or pair it with regular batteries in future models, since as it stands the Siàn has a mild hybrid powertrain that cannot run on electric power only, while the other two are Plug-in Hybrids. Mr. Winkelmann however claims in the presentation that Siàn "can be considered a rolling laboratory for what is to come". Indicating that at least part of this experience and know-how will trickle down to production models.

Another hypothesis is that we could see their components featured in future Lamborghini models, considering the investment that Porsche put into Rimac for electric technology and the fact that according to its CEO Mate Rimac the Croatian company would be working for an Italian luxury automaker. This kind of technology transfer would certainly benefit the development efficiency of new electrified models.

Finally, the choice not to use lithium-ion batteries right away could also be dictated by a current lack of technology. More companies now are said to be developing solid-state battery cells instead of regular ones using liquid electrolyte solutions. The promise of a smaller, lighter, cheaper battery with extremely higher energy density (and thus longer range), shorter recharge time, and safer technology, has caught the attention of every EV manufacturer for years now. Some prototypes have been said to reach a capacity of 400 Wh/kg, more than double that of many lithium-ion battery technologies present in the current electric vehicles. However, no one has yet managed to realise a scalable project that could make it to production. Solid-state batteries are still in the making but could represent a huge step up for future EVs, and an extremely important one for luxury performance automakers.

 3. Improved Efficiency

Another point made in the presentation is directly connected with the events of 2020. Despite the slight drop in deliveries last year was the best in the company’s history in terms of operating margins.

The impact of the pandemic led many companies to reorganise (some were even forced to lay off part of their workforce) and review processes to avoid redundancies and improve efficiency. Something that has probably benefitted Lamborghini considered the financial results and ‘lesson learned’ in the words of Winkelmann when he mentions that ‘in order to stay competitive’ they will need to ‘shorten development times’.

4.  Celebrating the Combustion Engine but with innovation

With its success, the Urus has become the true backbone of Lamborghini’s product line, while the other two products are expected to regain momentum as their substitutes come in the next few years. The SUV's financial performance has become crucial for Lamborghini to keep investing in future products development.

Even with electrification, the foreseeable future should still be centered around the ICE, which the majority of Lamborghini buyers are still demanding. Crucial to this is also the Squadra Corse. The racing division thanks to which Lamborghini can keep improving its road cars passing down technology initially developed for racing purposes, as it often happens in other companies with racing divisions.

direzione cor tauri*SourceLamborghini Media

5.  A hybrid product line

Lamborghini certainly plans to move fast to the next phase. Its 3-model product line will be entirely electrified by 2024.

It is not specified which model will be substituted and which will simply receive an update. While the Urus is still early in its lifecycle, both Aventador and Huracán are probably due for replacement, with the Aventador being now over 10 years old.

What is sure though is that all of them will get a hybrid powertrain by 2024.

6.  50% Fewer Emissions

This is the reduction in CO2 emissions target for 2025. Winkelmann set the objective to reduce the fleet carbon footprint by 50% in around 4 years as a further step in a process already started a few years ago.

Lamborghini’s factory has, in fact, been carbon neutral since 2015 thanks to its trigeneration plant reducing wastes and energy consumption.

lamborghini carbon neutral industrial plant*SourceLamborghini Media

7.  The 4th Model

In a previous interview, Mr. Winkelmann specified that we were unlikely to see a full-electric Lamborghini at least for the next decade. This time, however, he confirms the automaker’s commitment to delivering such EV within the second half of the 2020s.

Could this be the front-engine Lamborghini GT teased with the Estoque several years ago and still lacking in the firm’s product line?

What is probable anyway is that it will feature the MSB architecture platform developed by VW and used already for Bentley Continental GT and Flying Spur, Porsche Panamera, and most importantly for two cars that could feature similar characteristics to those of this upcoming Lamborghini, the Porsche Taycan and the Audi E-Tron GT.

lamborghini electric car*SourceLamborghini Media

8.  Unprecedented Investments

The OEM has also committed over €1.5 billion to fully develop this vision over the next 4 years. An amount that has never been used before over such a short period of time in the company’s history.

This should ensure the right shift into a long-term sustainable plan for the future.

CONCLUSION

Much of the competition in the EV space is going to play out in software development. Connectivity, self-driving capabilities, and other features are becoming more and more important, changing completely the paradigm on which a car was evaluated so far. This is the driver that is attracting many tech companies to the EV market.

These factors are going to be relevant for the luxury performance niche too, where Lamborghini is positioned. But the biggest challenge, as mentioned by Mr. Winkelmann, will be to keep delivering what the demanding clients expect from Lamborghini while improving performance and technology. The battle in this segment will most likely be fought on the battery technology side and its integration to deliver a unique driving experience. Something that could be at risk, once the V12 and some of the driving dynamics that make Lamborghini unique are lost, even more, if standardised and shared elements, such as VW platforms become more common.

However, Lamborghini approaches this crucial phase from a strong position in terms of branding and business performance. So far, it also distinguished itself from its competitors with the Siàn. Finally, even if the excessive standardisation might represent a risk, the backing of VW Group with the expertise accumulated so far in electric mobility can definitely play a crucial role in this new strategy's success.

Post-Pandemic Luxury Automotive Industry: Q1 2021

  • Topic: Strategy & Marketing, Supercars Future

In 2020, after a generally positive start of the first quarter, the world has been hit by the proverbial Black Swan. The pandemic changed profoundly our lives and, in many instances, has accelerated dynamics that were already developing in numerous industries.

After the virus diffusion, the outlook for the automotive industry got extremely negative very quickly. Trade decreased by 8% y-o-y in Q1. In April along instead the loss reached 49% compared to the previous year. In Europe, the overall number of new vehicles’ registration was down 38.1% (UNCTAD).

The most severe consequence of the pandemic was probably the shutdown of production plants that lasted several weeks. In the UK, according to Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark who talked with Bloomberg, these weeks only cost the automaker over £7 million.

bentley assembly line*Bentley assembly line upon restart after the shutdown. Source:Bentley Media

This period forced several automakers to undergo significant reorganisation. UK automakers Bentley, Aston Martin (already going through a difficult time), and McLaren particularly, had to lay off a considerable share of their personnel. Around 1,000, 500, and 1,200 workers respectively out of relatively small workforce compared to regular automakers. Additionally, many companies employed part of their resources to help their respective local or national public health system providing medical equipment.

However, despite the suffering, as discussed earlier, the luxury automotive segment was impacted less seriously. The first half of the year hit the companies more severely with the lockdowns, and all the companies showed signs of recovery in the second half of the year.

LUXURY CAR MANUFACTURERS SALES IN H1 AND H2 2020

graph1

WHAT ABOUT 2021?

The recovery continues in 2021. The vast majority of automakers (with a few who still haven’t published official numbers) reported positive results.

In the luxury segment, results are not just positive, but Bentley, Lamborghini, and Rolls-Royce have all reported record sales for their first quarter, growing respectively year-over-year by 40.2%, 24,6%, and 61.8%. Ferrari too has increased its deliveries to 2,771 units, a 1.2% more compared to 2020. This might seem less impressive, but it must be considered that its sales were already in line with 2019, the best year of the company, with deliveries that exceeded for the first time the 10,000 units. And surely Ferrari does not want to increase that volume massively incurring the risk of brand dilution.

On a separate note, Aston Martin, which was already going through a difficult time, instead made an even bigger step forward. The British automaker (which, must be said, started from a significantly low base volume in 2020) reported a +134% with 1353 cars sold in Q1 2021. 746 of those were SUVs. So, the DBX introduction seems to have had the effect it was supposed to have. Slightly more concerning, however, is the fact that almost like at Lamborghini, the other segments have remained almost stagnating, even though this is most likely due to the current line-up lifecycle and thus expected by Aston Martin’s decision-makers. The second rebirth could come with the production and delivery of the much expected Valkyrie, Valhalla, and Vanquish Vision.

LUXURY CAR MANUFACTURERS FIRST QUARTER’S SALES (2020-2021)

graph2*Porsche's data include only 911 sales

These results are especially positive if we consider that the biggest hit from the pandemic came, as specified before, with the shutdowns that generally happened in Q2. So, in most cases, the sales numbers were not affected by the virus outbreak at the time in 2020.

The trend however is not limited to the top-end of the market. Numbers reported by OEMs in the luxury and premium segment, right below the ones described before, tend to show similar if not even better results. The overall segment experienced a 29.6% growth compared to the still noteworthy 20.1% of the top luxury niche.

More modest instead is the result in the low to mid-price range passenger car market, where the overall growth among the reviewed brand is 8.1%.

WHY THE IMPRESSIVE GROWTH?

The reasons for this significant progress can be various. First of all, the luxury automotive market was already going through a 5-year continued positive momentum. So, the appetite for luxury vehicles might have remained consistent but a part of the purchase decisions delayed due to the Covid-19 impact. This along with the delay caused by industrial plants shutdowns resulted in an overall 11.39% sales decrease in 2020, which was still lower than the one recorded in the mass-production market at -14.59%.

Luxury car manufacturers’ wealthy clients are more likely to have a more resilient professional position as well as the possibility to take advantage of the opportunities created by this crisis in real estate, finance, and other sectors. Meaning that their customer base disposable income has probably increased on more than one occasion.

AUTOMOTIVE MARKET GLOBAL SALES FIGURES BY YEAR (IN THOUSANDS) (2015-2020)

LUXURY AUTOMOTIVE MARKET SALES FIGURES BY YEAR (2015-2020)

graph3

A significant part of this positive Q1 is accounted for by orders and sales coming from China. In 2020, it was the first country in the world to return to almost regular activity, and a consistent number of orders came from there. Despite the US still being the largest national market for almost all the companies in this niche, China keeps on gaining importance. Among the percentages reported in the Financials section, China always accounts for a large share of the APAC region sales. This is particularly true already for Bentley and Porsche, but other automakers are increasing their sales share in Asia. The +298% sales growth for Aston Martin in the APAC region is proof of that.

It is China during its period of rapid growth that indirectly helped to contain the consequences of the crisis in 2008. Its fast recovery early in 2020, while the rest of the world was gradually shutting down, benefitted the luxury automotive industry too, and with the country generally, way ahead in the population vaccination process, this remains true in 2021. Bloomberg reports new Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann's words saying that in 2021, China is projected to become the second-largest market for the Italian automaker.

Another interesting point made in the same article refers to the technological development applied to the purchasing process. As highlighted previously in the Review of the new Customer Journey in Luxury Automotive, digitisation is a crucial part of the equation and offers a number of new opportunities. Integrations of connectivity, augmented, and virtual reality through engines like Unreal are a great example of what technology can do for automotive marketing, customer service, and data-driven development. The need to find alternatives to the regular process through dealerships helped to streamline the services and improving efficiency while eliminating redundancies.

Furthermore, the customer service in luxury automotive, thanks to its more concentrated and personalised characteristics, offers even more varied and easier to implement opportunities compared to that of a high-volume automaker.

Finally, a potential psychological consequence of this period is that people might have attached a renewed value to private vehicles, given the restrictions and insecurities regarding crowded places and public transportation. In this regard, the improved experience that a luxury vehicle offers has probably gained such special importance that those who have the opportunity to enter this segment, ultimately decided not to pass on it.

How Luxury Automotive Design is Changing Today

  • Topic: Electric Vehicle Market, Strategy & Marketing, Supercars Future

When a new car is unveiled, the first characteristic we appreciate is its design. It is our first point of contact with a car. The aesthetics language always carries the signature of a well-known Chief Designer who gives the direction and heads an increasingly large team. Because like in many other aspects of luxury automotive, the design too gets more and more complex for a number of reasons. It is mainly due to the higher competition and expectations by the clients not only on the exterior design but on the interior too. Then, of course, there is fine-tuning beauty and engineering performance.

Very emblematic in this respect is a quote from Klaus Busse, Vice President of Design for Fiat, Abarth, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati, who highlights how on the newly released MC20 even the chromatic choices distinguish these two sides of a supercar development:

“[the front grill] brings together the design philosophy of the very clean, hand-sculpted upper of the car, with the very much computer-designed, purely functional, almost raw engineering low of the car, bringing these two worlds together. Beautiful sculpture but also performance-oriented engineering”

sketches automotive

This characteristic, even with vehicles becoming more and more complex, has always been there to fulfil the need for improved capabilities. Last but not least come different cultures, changing technology, which is truly relevant now, with the integration of digital instruments, and new car ownership patterns (this last one highly unlikely to affect the luxury niche).

But let’s back up a bit and have a look at the major change in the process compared to previous generations. How do customers have a major influence on luxury automotive manufacturers?

CUSTOMERS’ BARGAINING POWER

Even if it sounds complicated enough already, there’s more, especially when it comes to catering to a restricted group of extremely demanding clients. In Porter’s Five Forces framework, the buyers have particularly strong bargaining power for various reasons. First of all, because they are a highly limited pool of people. Secondly, because a high percentage of these clients own a considerable number of vehicles relative to the total output of every manufacturer as shown by the results of my survey in the graph below. The exceptionally wealthy ones may even become collectors, owning up to 10 or more cars. One example is the one who accepted to release an interview with me on a previous occasion.

Third, Customers’ power might even increase due to the current changes in automotive. While the industry is quite consolidated around a few companies, the overall size of this market is relatively small too. So, in addition to the current alternatives, with established automakers moving toward electrification there are numerous start-ups entering the market. Thus, the available choices increase, even if with brands that have less strength.

Again, the survey conducted among luxury and supercar owners, Design, on a scale from 1 to 10, is rated on average as the most important factor affecting their purchase decision.

FACTORS AFFECTING THE LUXURY CAR OWNERS PURCHASE DECISION (RATED 1-10)

lkdn graph

Brand loyalty is one of the major instruments for OEMs to limit the Buyers’ Bargaining Power. So, the way for automakers to increase that loyalty (among several others), particularly from the most valued ones, is to involve them in the design process, to assess trends and preferences.

A NEW DESIGN PROCESS

Quite often OEMs turn to third-party companies to carry out this kind of work. Specialised research firms apply a range of research methods, such as surveys, focus groups, and others, even presenting, at times, sketches, 3d or clay models in the early stages of development to get feedback.

However, I was surprised to learn the extent of this involvement. I recently talked with a professional who has been working in the industry in Italy for nearly 10 years. According to his experience, a selected group of important clients, whose number might vary from company to company depending on the overall customer base volume, can affect up to 40/50% of the whole design process.

He affirmed that this trend has only emerged quite recently but has been increasing since. After all, as proven by the rapid growth in personalisation and bespoke programs, as well as the one-off developments which represent the ultimate instance of clients working and influencing a car’s design, the luxury automotive sector is increasingly customer-centric. So, while we think about these authoritative brands as trendsetters, which is still true to some extent, that might often not be 100% accurate when it comes to luxury automotive design.

When a new model is revealed, we should keep in mind that most likely behind the pen of a lead designer and his/her team’s work, there is actually a significant influence from a restricted group of clients.

THE POWER OF DESIGN

Industrial design is a powerful tool to strengthen brand identity, create exclusivity, and even influence an entire market’s direction (if the company is strong enough). The easiest example that comes to mind outside of the automotive sector, is Apple. Multiple times, in the last 30 years through the influence and significance of design, the American company has effectively redefined the concepts of computing (starting with the 90s coloured iMac, and successively with MacBook and so on), entertainment (iPod, iPad, and mobile technology (iPhone).

The most striking changes however happened when said company presented something completely new to the world. Design in certain industries and luxury automotive is one, can become one the most important intangible assets a company has.

So, can handing over that much control to the clients eventually become a risk for OEMs? Can it make them lose their edge?

To some, it can. In an interview with Top Gear Motoring journalist Chris Harris expressed his opinion on a topic that is very relatable to this one by saying:

What's changed is that a lot of car companies are now making cars for customers. They say: “we think this is what they want”. Where the great car designs came about through stubborn idiosyncratic designers who went with an idea because they thought it was a great idea. When designers and engineers are allowed free rein to express the madness inside their heads, you get the Mini, you get the Renault Scénic, you get the Espace, you get vehicles that change the way that you interact with cars.

A sign of this trend, whether one considers it positive, negative, or simply necessary to maintain and improve sales numbers, is the search for the ‘everyday supercar’ that many automakers have been carrying out for a while now and resulted in SUVs, GTs, and estate (or shooting brake) cars. Something that in the past concerned almost exclusively the mass-production car market.

graph gts and estate

As mentioned initially, a number of other new factors affect certain design-related decisions in modern days. However, while they can become prominent for generalist brands, they are less likely to affect luxury automotive designers’ choices, or they are simply dictated by the industry evolution.

It is the case of new hybrid or electric powertrains that affect the interior design due to different spaces and volumes, as well as the exterior for the necessity to achieve lower drag coefficients and higher efficiency.

Another is the cultural difference. Being the largest automotive market in the world makes China extremely appealing for any automaker, even if for the majority of marques in the luxury niche the US is still the largest. Several companies had to develop specific vehicles with a longer wheelbase just to accommodate the preferences within this market.

To conclude, with the growing importance of a customer-centric luxury, it seems likely that certain design decisions in the future, will still be heavily influenced by clients’ preferences. However, if this is the direction, the concern remains over a potential lack of freedomwhich in the past allowed some iconic models that literally defined their own era, to see the light. Also, by becoming too dependant on generational aesthetic trends, the risk is to lose, in new models, the timelessness that characterised some cars from the past that we still admire today.

Luxury Automotive Resale Value and Depreciation: How and Why

  • Topic: Finance, Strategy & Marketing

Resale value is an extremely important factor in the luxury automotive sector as it affects different stakeholders and impacts the company long-term. Scarcity and exclusivity are arguably the most important elements of any strategy in this niche and are applied to different extents by every company. This allows maintaining a healthy balance between supply and demand, at least for this industry. And I specify this because as Enzo Ferrari himself said, perfectly exemplifying this concept:

“Ferrari farà sempre un'auto in meno di quante ce ne chieda il mercato”

“Ferrari will always deliver one car less than the market demand”

The production here is not about satisfying the demand. But creating more than what the market can supply. While overproduction is detrimental in any sector, that is even more relevant in luxury automotive. Oversupply can impact resale value negatively, scaring away potential clients and collectors who also buy these cars as investments, and ultimately diluting the brand value.

It is somewhat counterintuitive how right now the majority of luxury automakers are seemingly overlooking the ‘brand dilution’ factor with SUVs’ production numbers. One example is Lamborghini that has been steadily drastically increasing its production and sales in the last three years just thanks to the SUV Urus, while the other models have been decreasing the majority of times (with 2020 of course impacted by the pandemic). However, this trend should at least in the short-term help preserving the value of sold Huracán and Aventador.

LAMBORGHINI PRODUCTION NUMBERS PER MODEL (2017-2020)

table

A similar trend is observable in Rolls-Royce’s delivery numbers with Cullinan and other models, while Bentley despite the Bentayga outselling the rest of its range, registered extreme variations with the other models too, Flying Spur and Continental GT.

However, the production number in relation to demand is not the only factor affecting car depreciation. Others being mileage, production year, and, even if they are more difficult to define under precise variables, perceived brand value, and market segment.

Let’s have a look at some segments and how the models’ market value behaves.

ENTRY LEVEL

Every luxury automaker has an ‘entry level’ car that gives clients access to the brand, as it is significantly cheaper than flagship models. These cars are, of course, still much more expensive than mass-produced ones, but they usually still end up selling well over 10,000 units over their entire lifecycle. It must be noted however that very often, new clients actually access a brand through the pre-owned market rather than with a new car. For this reason, many companies run official pre-owned programs.

The models reviewed here are Aston Martin Vantage Coupé, Ferrari Portofino, McLaren 540C, and Lamborghini Huracán Coupé (LP 610-4 and LP 580-2) for sale in the UK market registered between 2017 and 2020.

DEPRECIATION BY REGISTRATION YEAR (2017-2020)

Some interesting observations come from these first two graphs. The two models that seem to depreciate the most after one year are Vantage and Portofino, while the other two do not vary much. All of them, however, depreciate significantly due to mileage, where a range between 5 and 10,000 miles can cause up to £10,000 decrease in value.

LUXURY SEGMENT

The second interesting segment is the luxury one, usually featuring Grand Tourers more than pure sports cars. For this segment, the models reviewed are Aston Martin DB11, Bentley Continental GT Coupé, Ferrari GTC4 Lusso (V12), Rolls-Royce Wraith. The cars are comparable as even though both Aston Martin and Ferrari have a strong ‘Sport’ component, in each automaker’s product line these are the most luxurious options. As for Bentley and Rolls-Royce which are more luxury-oriented, Continental GT and Wraith represent the sportier 2-door option, instead of the full-fledged luxury flagship. The years covered are the same as before.

CARS DEPRECIATION
BY MILEAGE

DEPRECIATION BY REGISTRATION
YEAR (2017-2020)lux year

In this segment, cars suffer a higher depreciation rate compared to the other two. The causes can be different. First of all, being cars engineered for everyday use, they usually have higher mileage than sports cars. Another reason could be a lower demand for pre-owned luxury cars that are often driven by a chauffeur and are highly personalised such as a Rolls-Royce, which is not developed to offer the thrill of fast driving. The two models that experience the most absolute depreciation from mileage are Wraith and GTC4 Lusso. On the other hand, the Ferrari is the one that seems to maintain its value through different years.

FLAGSHIP SUPERCARS

The four models included in the graphs below from the 2017-2020 period are Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, Ferrari 488 GTB, McLaren 720s, and Lamborghini Aventador S.

CARS DEPRECIATION
BY MILEAGE

DEPRECIATION BY REGISTRATION YEAR (2017-2020)

From these two graphs, it can be observed how DBS Superleggera and 720S suffer the most depreciation due to mileage increase. As for the registration year, the differences are more visible for the 720s again, and the Aventador S. Both Aston Martin and Ferrari here do not lose too much value from one year to the other.

SOLUTIONS ADOPTED BY COMPANIES TO AVOID OR LIMIT DEPRECIATION

Of all the models observed, Ferraris are the ones that maintain most of their value. Lamborghini Aventador too seems to not depreciate drastically. As for the others, they all show a significant depreciation over 3 to 4 years that goes from around 30% up to 50% in the worst cases.

This is most likely due to the production model. As mentioned in previous articles, while Ferrari adopts the production-to-order approach, others do not. This might result in oversupply and value loss due to low demand. The two companies that are affected by the highest depreciation of the ones reviewed are Aston Martin and McLaren.

Aston Martin comes out of two very difficult years, and during 2020 put a lot of effort into destocking to translate to a Ferrari-like business model as highlighted previously. As for McLaren, it had with having similar issues, as well as having been hit severely by the pandemic. Also, the strategy of releasing an extremely high number of special limited edition series, and derivatives of the Sports Series 570S in just 10 years, probably took some exclusivity away from each model and had a detrimental effect overall. This is likely a major factor behind the significant loss of value of an exclusive model such as the Senna on the used market.

mclaren senna*McLaren Senna, Source:McLaren Media

A measure that is quite common to increase car desirability, is the one applied by the likes of Ferrari and Pagani of allocating slots for the limited series only to top clients who already collect the brand’s cars.Ferrari uses this strategy for some production models too. They will not sell certain cars to clients who are more likely to sell them very quickly or have proven to not being loyal to the brand.

Finally, these two companies, along with others, also have a specialised pre-owned program in which they buy back cars from dealers, and once (if needed) these are serviced and restored to perfection they are put on sale again. This is a great solution not only to sell used cars at a premium compared to other platforms, thanks to the OEM’s certification but also to control the supply. Deliberately limiting the presence of used vehicles on the market is a ‘manipulation’ that can help drive up their value.

The Luxury Automakers and Branded Residences Trend

  • Brand: Aston Martin, Bentley, Pininfarina, Porsche
  • Topic: Strategy & Marketing

Bentley Motors announced a few days ago the development of its latest project. A 60-stories building co-developed with American developer Dezer to offer a Bentley branded residence experience featuring lots of amenities. Among these, probably the most striking is the so-called ‘Dezervator’, an elevator that will allow owners to bring up with them up to 4 vehicles and park them alongside their apartment.

luxury automotive branded residences*Source:Bentley Media - Bentley Branded Residence

This solution was already featured, a while back, in the Porsche Design Tower, developed once again by Dezer with the German automaker.

Bentley in fact is just the last one of a fast-growing list of luxury automakers and luxury brands approaching this market. Before the British marque, similar developments have been started, or are already in the pipeline for Aston Martin, Bugatti, Mercedes, Pininfarina, Porsche, and Tonino Lamborghini(at least in a way related to the automaker).

Branded Residences have been a growing trend in the luxury industry for a while now. It is gradually expanding to lower segments of the market too. But while the vast majority of these projects is still handled by Hoteliers (Marriott being the largest), automakers now constitute a consistent share of this niche.

But how does it work and why would a low-volume automaker develop and sell or rent a super-luxury residence?

A MARKET OVERVIEW

The competition in the top-end of the luxury market is becoming fiercer. Along with automotive manufacturers, also fashion brands are approaching it. So, for anyone interested you could also decide to buy, or book a long-stay in an Armani Residence in Dubai, or a Missoni one in Miami.

Clients in the niche are becoming more and more demanding. A high level of customer service is expected,so brands have to constantly come up with new, innovative, and unique solutions to lure the attention of their selected clientele.

graph overall*Source:Savills

pie graph

Required services might vary from more basic ones like mail and package delivery, restaurant, spa and salon reservations, golf courts, 24/7 security, various loyalty scheme, and Concierge services, to on-demand like housekeeping, laundry services, in-home dining service, personal shopping, personal trainer, spa treatments, childcare services, pet services, meeting room services/office equipment, use of the guest suite. From there, pretty much anything is possible and it represents an added value for the clients. Yacht Marinas, Art Galleries, Shops, Meditation rooms, Movie theatres.  Prices vary from $1 million up to around $50.

According to Savills three are the main locations in terms of Branded Residences available schemes. Miami, Dubai, and New York. Asian Cities are instead the fastest growing. On top Hangzhou, Guangzhou in China, and Seoul in South Korea with a projected growth of 189%, 180%, and 78% over the next 5 years respectively.

Additionally, while right now the Automotive marques share of this market is around 5%, this is set to grow up to 24% by 2025, second, as a non-hotel brand, to fashion ones at 28%.

AUTOMAKERS COMPETITION AND OBJECTIVES

On the one hand, this is an interesting diversification solution in a market that is steadily growing and is relatively new. On the other hand, some risks must be taken into account.

The branding of these buildings is usually licensed by the marques to the developers, and later the owners will also pay some fees on it. Other earnings can come from design work and technical consultancy. So, while this represents an additional stream of revenues, there might be risks connected with brand image. The reduced control over the property management might affect negatively the company’s name if the services or facilities are not considered up to standard.

If money is invested too in a different type of contract the risk might increase. This is in fact a very competitive niche and with a small customer base. Luckily, at this end of the market, with the asked price in the tens of millions, the possibilities are almost endless. So, luxury automakers and their partners have to rely on features and services that other brands outside the automotive niche cannot, or would not think about.

aston martin floorplan*Source:Aston Martin Residences - Aston Martin Residence Penthouse Floor plan

First of all, the design can be daring and become a stand-out characteristic when it is related to a supercar manufacturer more than a regular hotelier. As for special features, the car elevator paired with the sky garage is one. But probably the most emblematic is Aston Martin’s $50 million penthouse that includes in the deal a 1 of 24 track-only Vulcan plus track driving lessons and a membership to a private track club. This kind of deal along with the experience itself offers proper access to the brand’s life and promises a continued experience in time.

Some projects have a different drive. It is the case of Pininfarina. As discussed in the review of the automotive coachbuilding sector, throughout the years as the bespoke automotive production faltered, brands like Pininfarina have expanded becoming full-fledged design houses. In this case, the architectural design, as well as the sustainability principles applied are fully coherent with the brand’s portfolio and new image.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

All in all, this market offers clients the opportunity of buying a property that includes every amenity and service imaginable, but at the same time also becomes part of a brand and its lifestyle. And this was probably the main driver for the entry of automotive and fashion (and other non-hotel) firms in this space.

This niche is new, so there might be doubts about its long-term resilience when it comes to properties that command such huge premiums, especially after this difficult year. Nonetheless, branded residences can become an important marketing tool for luxury automakers. They can help to further increase the marque’s exclusivity factor, promote their values, such as sustainability in the case of Bentley through design, materials, and innovation, and create a closer relationship with the clients inspiring brand loyalty.

Aston Martin Marketing Mix: The Company's 8Ps

  • Brand: Aston Martin
  • Topic: Strategy & Marketing

Over the last two years, Aston Martin underwent a difficult period and a deep restructuring. Lawrence Stroll, its new Executive Chairman completed a £500 million deal with his consortium, acquiring 16.7% of the company with £182 million and injecting £318 in a new rights issue. A crucial component of this reorganisation is the shift to a production-to-order (or make-to-order) business model. In the words of its former CEO Andy Palmer, Aston Martin aims at becoming the 'British Ferrari' (Autocar).

This is extremely important as it will likely translate into a clear departure from the previous plans for the company. In 2018, which represented a record year for Aston Martin with 6,441 units sold, the medium-term plan was to scale up production to about 14,000 units per year. The new direction for the business will presumably reduce this number significantly, even with high sales expected for the DBX. Let's have a look at what changes the company is going through in terms of the marketing mix and brand strategy.

METHOD

Once again, the framework used is the Marketing Mix 8Ps employed in my previous marketing mix analysis of Ferrari. To check the details about the method used here follow this link: Ferrari Marketing Mix: The Prancing Horse's 8Ps

PRODUCT

The current Aston Martin range is composed of three core products that are also part of the company's heritage, something that cannot be missing in it. Vantage, DB11 and DBS Superleggera. Along with these come two unprecedented additions, born from the new strategy and from an evolving automotive industry where low-volume manufacturers expand their market coverage establishing themselves in other segments. An SUV and a mid-engine product line.

The DBX follows the current trend of the market, but differently from its main competitors, Aston Martin does not have the backing of a larger automotive group. Thus, the platform for this car has been developed completely from scratch, and according to the company, for this reason, it will ensure a unique driving experience that others cannot match.

The mid-engine cars come from the previous partnership with Red Bull Racing established in 2016. Its advanced technology department collaborated with Aston Martin to create a complete line of hybrid rear mid-engine cars, starting with the highly limited Valkyrie (150 units), and Valhalla (500 units). To these should follow the mid-engine Vanquish Vision that was presented at Geneva International Auto Show in 2019 as a concept, and will be a production model.

aston martin product range*Aston Martin Valhalla is already included in the graph while not being delivered yet. It will likely go on sale in late 2021.

These new additions to the Aston Martin range will expand the brand's reach and competition. So far, its main focus has been on GTs and Sports cars, with no clear competitor on the entire line, but just with some models by other manufacturers like Bentley Continental GT, Ferrari 812, and GTC4 Lusso, Porsche Panamera, 718, and 911. On the other hand, the DBX will go against Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, and the upcoming Ferrari Purosangue (while Porsche's SUVs are positioned in a lower price bracket).

Its entire line of mid-engine cars goes straight into the competition with Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, and McLaren's core businesses. These models though, along with the brand that is being heavily revamped, will also bring the signature of star Formula 1 engineer and aerodynamicist Adrian Newey. His contribution led to countless victories in the sport, and he is considered to be one of the best ever to work in it. This factor alone contributed massively to the expectations for these cars.

The two most important attributes for an Aston Martin product have to be Brand and Design. An Aston Martin is and has to be immediately recognisable by its unparalleled elegance and design features, such as the front grid. Also, as reported in the survey I carried out, featured in the article Not Just Luxury Cars: Aston Martin Diversification Strategy, Aston Martin scored particularly high (8.1) when it comes to brand importance in the purchase decision. On a 1-10 scale, outscored all of its competitors, except for Ferrari by a mere 0.1. This indicates an extremely important brand name to be preserved as a crucial component of its marketing mix.

All the core Aston Martin models have been positioned as a perfect mix of elegance and comfort while still offering thrilling performance. In the middle between more luxury-oriented automakers like Bentley, and pure performance-oriented ones like McLaren. Valkyrie, Valhalla, and Vanquish should significantly change that.

Regarding the features, while having lagged behind some other automakers due to the deal that allowed Aston Martin to install only previous generation Mercedes technology in their car, the renewed collaboration should solve this issue too. With the new Partnership detailed here, Aston Martin will have access to the latest technologies offered by the German automaker which is currently one of the leaders in the industry.

PRICE

The price positioning is at the top-end of the market. It ranges from £125,500 of the Vantage up to £247,500 for the DBS Superleggera Volante. DBX starts at £162,125. The hypercar Valkyrie will be well over £2 million, while the Valhalla should be around £1 million.

All of these starting prices might vary massively once options and personalisation by specialised division Aston Martin Q are applied. These can go easily over an additional £100,000.

price tag*A relatively lightly equipped DBS Superleggera Volante reaching £265,805 after options

Value retention is a crucial component of this market for collectors, investors, and the brand itself. This is in fact, a big factor in the company's decision to change its business model. In the past years, Aston Martin cars suffered from steep depreciation. 2005/6 Vantage can be found on the market for a little over £30,000.

Thus, a big effort by the company in 2020, went into destocking. And limiting the offer with the ‘Ferrari-like' production-to-order model should grant a minor depreciation of pre-owned cars in the future preserving the brand exclusivity too at the same time.

PLACE

As of 2020, Aston Martin sells cars through a network of 168 dealers, with a significant increase in Asia, and particularly China with new locations in Kunming, Foshan, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Xi'an.

The network is operated through franchises, which enables strong control over brand positioning and limits investments.

Also, like in the previous analysis, Aston Martin dealers are located in specific areas with a higher density of high-net-worth individuals or other luxury car dealerships.

dealers map in london*Aston Martin and other dealers locations in two areas of London.

The pandemic in 2020 deeply affected the dealers' operations. Globally there were many closures and the network had to adapt putting in place health and safety measures for staff and clients. This also brought an acceleration on the development of remote points of contact, with increased services digitization and online engagement. These processes will be maintained in the future offering the option of online or face-to-face service.

PROMOTION

Aston Martin's restructuring and new strategy modified radically its promotion channels as well.

Traditionally, the pillars of its strategy are motorsport, events, alternative projects, and movies. Over the last decade and especially in the last year, the range of activities and channels has been expanding significantly.

Like other automakers in the space, Aston Martin was born, in 1913, from a racing heritage. Despite the focus on sports car production, one of its founders, Lionel Martin, actively participated in hill climb races. Over the decades its racing heritage was firmly established. Since the 50s, the marque has successfully participated in endurance championships such as the Le Mans 24 Hours. In the 2000s, after a long stop, it returned to the endurance competitions such as the FIA WEC. This has since become part of Aston Martin's image in luxury automotive, and an important promotion platform.

After many successes, in 2021, the new executive decided to partially leave the WEC activities to re-enter Formula 1. This has been a massive move, in which Lawrence Stroll, rebranded his Formula 1 team Racing point as Aston Martin Cognizant Formula 1 Team, bringing effectively the marque back to the motorsport top series after 60 years. Along with this, the team brought in one of the most successful F1 drivers of all time, Sebastian Vettel, which in fact, being a very influential personality in motorsport has already been featured in the latest beautiful ad online for the DBX. And thanks to the newly established partnership, Vantage and DBX also became Formula 1 official safety cars during the Grand Prix. This campaign brought massive results, and the team reveal was by far the most anticipated of the season, with huge coverage on every channel. Most importantly, it brings Aston Martin closer to what, so far, only Ferrari and McLaren could boast in terms of Motorsport activities and promotion channels.

Additionally, it is known that Aston Martin has expressed its interest in entering with Valkyrie, in 2023, the new FIA WEC LM Hypercar series, which is another championship that promises to attract a lot of attention.

With regards to the events, Aston Martin offers a range of experiences to both clients and enthusiasts. From the Art of Life lifestyle program, bringing guests through road trips in special locations, to bespoke events for groups, to the AMR Drivers' Club started in 2019. A program of track days offering both clients and enthusiasts driving experiences on famous racing tracks with cars from the fleet available or private ones.

Aside from its core business, Aston Martin undertakes a range of innovative and unexpected projects. Bicycle, boats, real estate, and more, detailed HERE, which contribute to expanding the brand's reach and reputation.

The fourth channel I mentioned was the Movie industry. Because, while many luxury automotive brands today and in the past have been featured in movies and television shows, no one enjoys an almost exclusive presence in one of the most successful franchises in Cinema. Aston Martin is, in fact, 007 car of choice. And the next James Bond movie ‘No Time to Die', now delayed multiple times due to the pandemic, will be no exception with four different Aston Martin models featured in it.

Of course, along come also a wide offering of fashion and lifestyle apparel and items developed in partnership with luxury brands.

Finally, tying in with all the previous points, the company enjoys a strong and distinctive online presenceon all the major platforms, with the F1 entry giving it a further boost. To this, must be added the models and new unveilings coverage by reviewers and influencers in the automotive space. One above all, Mr. JWW, a successful YouTuber and entrepreneur that in partnership with the brand developed a bespoke highly personalised line of DBX.

Over the summer, to take advantage of the fast-growing E-Sports sector, Aston Martin participated with its team in official competitions, and from 2021 it will have one as well in the F1 E-Sports Championship.

PARTICIPANTS

Participants are involved on multiple levels through the customer journey that, as dictated by modern standards in the industry becomes increasingly diversified and complex.

From the order to the specification and personalisation through Aston Martin specialised division Q, of after-sales services and brand experiences. These points of contact will likely be expanded too, via online services. The automaker already has a range of apps for clients and enthusiasts to configure a car and gather other useful information. But right now, solutions bringing together clients as a family and closer to the brand through new seamless services to improve loyalty are more and more common. So a specialised app for owners can be expected as well.

PHYSICAL EVIDENCE

Aston Martin's online presence, overall brand appearance, and physical locations all convey a consistent messageand pretty much the same feeling one gets while sitting in a real car. A sense of proper refinement and luxury. As specified by the company, this is maintained through strict control over their dealers' management. The spaces themselves are proper ateliers where clients can specify their cars' options down the tiniest detail. A similar look & feel is brought also in stores and shops selling branded merchandise.

PROCESS

The process can vary a lot depending on the involvement of each individual. As reviewed before, all the services are increasingly personalised and the improvement in digital technology will probably strengthen them. On-demand content delivered to potential clients will be more common.

Also, Aston Martin's new production-to-order approach, intrinsically means that the overall process will become more personal and involving for each car produced, further improving brand loyalty and reputation. This process, anyway, has just started so there are time and space for new solutions.

PERSONALISATION

This is the one characteristics around which revolves most of the modern innovations and refinement in this industry.

Aston Martin Q division announced in 2012 (its name inspired by the 007 series), has recently been updated with two different programs.

The first is Aston Martin Collection. A service that offers a range of pre-designed components to enrich a model. The second, Aston Martin Commission instead gives access to the virtually unlimited options offered to clients and a close collaboration with the specialised team. Materials, colours, finishes, graphic details, internal components, and more.

Along with these, Aston Martin produces a number of limited series dedicated to specialised events and anniversaries, the last of which is the Aston Martin Wings series inspired by the connection with the Royal Air Force. Its three industrial plants, in fact, are located on the former RAF bases.

Last but not least, going with bespoke high luxury, is the One-Off Luxury car development trend. The Prototype Operations program that gave birth to the Aston Martin Victor could bring new one-off models more regularly in the future. This represents the absolute peak of luxury personalisation, with clients working closely with the brand's designers and engineers to develop a unique car.

There is still much that has come to fruition in this renewed business. The DBX potential success, the F1 campaign, the new models, and other projects such as electrified cars. All in all, anyway, Aston Martin has laid the foundations for a successful new decade and a competition stronger than ever. For sure, all this makes it one of the most exciting companies to follow right now.

The Best Car Configurator: Pagani and MHP with Unreal Engine

  • Brand: Pagani

Last week the Unreal Build: Automotive 2021, an event that was first hosted in 2017, was held online. During the Conference, companies collaborating with automotive giants presented some bleeding-edge technology applications that promise to revolutionise the user experience, marketing, processes, data, and KPI collection in the industry. At the base of all this is the Unreal Engine.

Definitely well-known by millennials and GenZ, probably less by others, the Unreal Engine is, in fact, born fromEpic Games as a videogame engine at the end of the 90s. Since then, it has been used to develop countless titles, and crucially, 3D Graphic content in a range of different fields.

One of the great projects presented is a collaboration between Pagani Automobili and MHP and introduced as the best car configurator in the industry.

MHP is a German consultancy owned at 81.8% by Porsche that focuses on Automotive IT services and innovation.

THE CURRENT MARKET

Mostly in the last decade, luxury automotive has seen the rising trend of personalisation. It has become crucially important and extensive tailor-made programs turned into a necessity for luxury automakers to complement their products and define the customer experience it is expected from such them today.

While modern automotive ateliers are refined places, where clients can review a huge variety of fabrics, material samples, and hues for the cars’ bodywork paint, there is an obvious issue with this process. Dealerships will not have the actual product the client wants to showcase. At best, the same model with a different specification. This is even more relevant for OEMs that produce an extremely limited volume of cars such as Pagani, Koenigsegg, and Bugatti.

Pretty much all the modern luxury automakers nowadays have a car configurator to bypass this obstacle. This can come in different versions. A basic one, built in the companies’ websites which is useful for new models, or first-time buyers to get an idea of what to expect but also available to anyone. And a more in-depth one, which is used by employees in dealerships, ateliers, or other specialised departments where the personalisation can really get to the smallest detail.

So, what are the limitations of this model? How can it be improved and what’s the next step?

THE PROJECT

Here’s when MHP and Unreal Engine come in. As said by the Senior Consultant at MHP:

“Because every single vehicle is built exclusively for a customer, the retailers don’t have the physical cars available in the stores. We had to develop a solution that is visually appealing, photorealistic, and provides this immersive feel, all inside of an Unreal Engine-based application.”

This experience was enabled by the evolution of the Unreal Engine and especially by the addition of ray tracing. This graphic rendering technique simulates the behaviour of light in an environment and when recursive it even replicates the effects caused by light refraction, reflection, absorption, and fluorescence hitting different materials. This last step effectively achieved photorealism.

The video below is a quick demonstration of the Pagani configurator capabilities only in its lighter version that you can try out at the link at the end of the page:

The importance of this new application is that along with being aesthetically superior, it will not just be limited to the configurator. MHP transformed a “Point-of-sales application into a flexible rendering backend”.

This means that along with the retail configurator, and differently from other similar applications, the new platform can be used as a streaming configurator, or to generate high-quality images, videos, and other digital content and giveaways on demand. In turn, this availability will make for a more immersive customer experience, a closer connection with the brand, and limit the costs as everything can be managed by the same application.

Another noteworthy achievement is the creation of configurable videos. Posing the client’s personalised car into a digital environment allows seeing a realistic rendering of it in different settings (those who have been to the Pagani museum in San Cesario sul Panaro will recognise the extremely accurate setting reproduced in the configurator and visible in the video above), times, and weathers. Also, along with a specialised crew, MHP shot a film around the Imola racetrack in Italy. Here, the subject, a Pagani car, can be swapped or modified according to the clients’ requirements to see the actual vehicle's appearance in real surroundings making the experience much deeper and overall better.

IMPLICATIONS AND TECHNOLOGY POTENTIAL EVOLUTIONS

According to Pascal Bayer, Application Architect at MHP, this system based on Unreal Engine is structured as a modular service that can cater to different needs all from this single source. This connects the different application interfaces used for each service and importantly, also allowed for the integration of analytics and CRM tools.

unreal scheme*Source:Unreal Build: Automotive 2021

Integration, with the possibility of gathering additional data at a marketing level, opens up opportunities to improve and personalise even more strategies and customer experience.

Certainly, an important development, as mentioned before, is the potential for a real-time content distribution system, set up on the cloud. An on-demand rendering system accessible from a cloud service to directly export footage and images can be a powerful marketing tool as well.

The evolutions and applications of this technology in the coming years could be countless. One above all that has been growing fast in different industries is the use of VR. While not present at the moment for this platform, developers claim it will certainly be with future versions.

Other noteworthy use cases, some of them already present or in development, are:

  • User experience with infotainment systems

  • Ads and live-action CGI Integrations and other marketing content

  • Integrations with Pixel Streaming Services by Google

  • Design review

  • Integrations for AR, VR, XR

  • Factory planning

  • Engineering

To give further insights on the applications and processes that can integrate the Unreal Engine technology, here are some great infographics provided during the conference.

graph2

graph3*Source:Unreal Build: Automotive 2021

The possible applications of this technology are countless, and as far as luxury automotive marketing goes, Pagani and MHP realised an important tool that can greatly improve the customer experience as well as being the cornerstone for future developments and services. These integrations will become more and more regular as Epic Games’ vision of giving creators the most streamlined and user-friendly platform possible, takes shape. With the foreseen advent of aMetaverse, the digital experience then could really replace the face-to-face one even for market segments such as luxury automotive where the personal and tailored approach is a prerequisite today.

For new generations, this digital integration will also be expected as part of an increasingly personalised customer service.

Should Lamborghini produce a GT car?

  • Brand: Lamborghini
  • Topic: Strategy & Marketing

Nowadays, Lamborghini is, for the most part, synonymous with flashy, futuristic-looking, impractical, “uncomfortable”, but luxurious, beautiful, and crazy-fast 2-seater supercars. Naturally, being impractical, and uncomfortable, to a certain extent, is not a concern for a Lamborghini owner. Because anyone who buys a car like this knows exactly what is signing up for.

After the Miura in the 60s and 70s, and even more after the Countach that has become a proper Icon of the 80s, Lamborghini’s main focus has become producing V12-powered (later V10 too) flagship supercars. As the years passed, along with maintaining the values mentioned before, the main focus for these cars has been offering outstanding performance. And they have achieved some noteworthy results. The latest with the Aventador SVJ at the Nurburgring (and we could expect more from the recently released Huracán STO).But the top-class performance and the right driving experience come with a cost. Harsh ride quality and weight-saving measures are a natural requirement. So uncomfortable does not mean that who buys a Lamborghini gets bad seats but will get the most appropriate gear to drive fast and properly enjoy the car’s capabilities. The same goes for poor practicality, these cars are born for the track, not for long trips.

In the beginning, though, I wrote “for the most part”because at the end of 2017, to the two product lines Aventador and Huracán, Lamborghini added the SUV Urus. This latest addition certainly addresses both the characteristics of comfort and practicality that lack in the other two, as well as giving the brand access to the hottest market segment right now. Saying, in fact, that Urus is just a mere part of Lamborghini’s production might seem an understatement as since its inception it straight doubled the company’s numbers. In the last two years, it sold more than 50% of Lamborghini’s total output.

LAMBORGHINI PRODUCTION (2015-2020)

But there is another popular category when it comes to luxury super and sports cars. The Grand Touring, or GT. Usually, a 2+2, 2, or 4-door, high-performance car that is more practical and suited for long trips in style. A range of vehicles for customers who want the thrill of speed, and the status of an iconic brand while also being able to enjoy a daily-drive luxurious experience.

So, why does Lamborghini not produce GTs? And most of all, would it be a good idea?

HAS IT ALWAYS BEEN THE CASE?

The first criticism that could pop into one’s mind is that this kind of vehicle could be perceived as out of brand and dilute its image. But there are two strong arguments in favour. First is the success of the Urus which speaks for itself. Second, as some purists still criticise the idea of a different class of Lamborghini cars, it is sufficient to back up a little and have a look at the manufacturer’s history.

At its birth, in the vision of the founder Ferruccio Lamborghini, the company would have produced luxurious and sporty grand tourers. Its first cars, the 350GT, and the successor 400GT were just that. Lamborghini did not want to sacrifice interior refinement and comfort in favour of performance.

350gt and 400gt*From left: Lamborghini 350GT and 400GT

Later came the Espada from the previous concept Marzal. At the same time, Lamborghini produced also a short run of the GT Islero, followed by the Jarama. After these models, through the 80s the direction changed, with an increasing focus on super and sports cars. From the flagship Countach to the entry-level Urraco, Silhouette, and Jalpa.

It is on the back of this tradition, that in 2008 in Paris, Lamborghini introduced the GT concept Estoque, celebrating the Espada even in the name (which is also the name of the bullfighters’ weapon). Why then, the Estoque never became a production model?

There has been quite a lot of speculation on this topic. Some bring the marketing factor, some the brand image. However, one factor that likely affected the decision-making process was also the most severe financial crisis of the 2000s that at the time of the Estoque reveal, 2009, was in its worst phase.

WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE?

Right now, there are rumours of a 4-door Lamborghini set to arrive in 2025 and representing effectively a fourth product line for the company. But as its development should begin this year and might have well been delayed by the pandemic aftermath, there are no sure info about it.

But would it be worth it? Is the market big enough for such a model? After all, the largest automotive trend of the last few years in pretty much every price segment is the SUVs growing popularity. That meant a general loss of interest for saloon cars. This is reflected in the overall sales within the luxury market too.

LUXURY AUTOMOTIVE SALES BY SEGMENT (2015-2020): GTS, SUVS, AND OTHER (SPORTS, SPECIAL, AND LIMITED SERIES)

industry graph*Data are based on official data from Aston Martin, Bentley, Bugatti, Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini, Porsche, Rolls-Royce.
**Porsche’s data include only 911 and special/limited series due to pricing

The graph shows some interesting trends. In the last five years, as expected the SUV segment has been expanding and remained consistent in 2020 despite the exceptional situation that brought an overall decrease in sales in the sector. Additionally, this product type segment will most likely expand even more. The new Aston Martin DBX, which has experienced strong sales and order, has just been delivered in Q4 of 2020, and Ferrari will soon release its own competitor Purosangue.

At the same time though, it is also interesting to observe that the GT segment, after losing 24% in 2016 compared to the previous year, has remained strong up until 2020, where it also endured a drop. But, if Porsche’s experience with SUVs before any other company (not included in the graph because of the different price bracket) is anything to go by, there might be a new factor strengthening the GT section. It is electrification. Only in its first year, the Taycan has been a commercial success with over 20,000 units delivered. So, not only the GT segment is currently strong, but, even if it does not have the SUV momentum, it shows growth potential through new technologies.

In this sense, Lamborghini would have a range of options. Excluding the pure ICE due to increasingly restrictive environmental regulations, a new GT coming in the next 4 to 5 years, could either use a hybrid powertrain or be even more daring with a full-electric one. In both cases, Lamborghini has the big advantage of a platform used extensively within the VW Group.

The MSB architecture, born in 2016 with the Panamera, has been used as a platform for Bentley Continental GT and Flying Spur, as well as for the EVs Taycan and the new Audi e-Tron GT. Like it happened for the Urus this would help drive the development costs down significantly.

Also, Lamborghini’s success on social media indicates that the brand enjoys a younger audience than other competitors, which as highlighted in a previous analysis is more open to electrification even in the luxury sports car segment.

In this regard though, there is the potential challenge of a GT car perception. Grand Tourers are often aimed at a more mature audience or families. So, even if just partially, such a model could be more disconnected from the brand’s core audience.

SOME CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

In the modern luxury automotive market, along with Porsche that diversified its offering heavily way earlier, many competitors are adopting a similar strategy. Even with different starting points, the majority of the companies are expanding to cater to vastly different audiences. From Aston Martin that just introduced an SUV and will soon release its first line of mid-engine supercars, to Ferrarithat after a shooting brake, further expanded with the new GT Roma, the hybrid SF90 Stradale, and will soon release its own SUV, to McLarenwith its GT. Even, a super low-volume production company like Koenigsegg, on constant research for innovation with the Gemera offered an extremely different product.

Lamborghini removed any doubts about brand dilution with the success of the Urus. And as much as the SUV was part of its history thanks to the LM002 in the 80s, the GT is too when the very origins of the company are taken into consideration.

The parent company platforms present an extremely advantageous opportunity to reduce R&D costs. So, as long as the Italian automaker maintains its image of ‘Future Shaper’ without compromising on features and quality, creating a daily-driver that can appeal to a wider and younger audience, its strong crowd of customers and admirers who might become clients, will likely follow new and daring projects.

Marketing Racing #9: Rimac Social Media Strategy: Mate and his Technology

  • Brand: Rimac
  • Topic: Marketing Racing, Strategy & Marketing

Rimac is the latest success in the luxury automotive industry, and in just 10 years distinguished itself for being an extreme innovator with its high-performance electric powertrains as well as other correlated technologies. As Mate Rimac stated during an interview:

In order to survive, we basically became, at the very beginning, a technology company”.

ctwo production line*Rimac C_Two Production Line©Rimac Media

This is indeed the reason that attracted large investments from numerous top-tier automotive companies, both in the luxury segment and lower ones. The latest one being a stake increase by Porsche which already owned 15.5% of the company, and last week, with an additional €70 million investment brought it to 24%. To this and other companies that have already established strategic partnerships with the Croatian OEM, new European manufacturers could follow, especially in the performance market segment.

In the last few months, 2016 F1 World Champion Nico Rosberg's interest and C_Two's final purchase brought a lot of media attention. However, with only an extremely low number of Concept One produced and the C_Two still in development, Rimac (at least for now) cannot compete with other luxury automakers when it comes to content like car reviews and certain communication strategies.

Let’s see then which strategy the company is adopting on social media and which strength it is playing on.

MONDAYS WITH MATE

By far the most interesting is YouTube. In a previous analysis about the latest luxury automotive start-ups entering the market, it was highlighted the importance of a main figure at the top. An inspiring personality that becomes the proper face of the company. And as for the two before, Pagani and Koenigsegg, Rimac too adopted this narrative. One of their most prolific series on the official YouTube channel is ‘Mondays with Mate’, a particularly good example of that.

As the title suggests, in fact, each video is hosted by Mater Rimac himself, going in-depth into the topic chosen and usually supported by a professional working in that specific area of interest.

But there is more. The series is based mainly on questions received from the viewers, and the topics picked again, most of the time, revolves around technical aspects of the C_Two and other Rimac technologies development.

The series includes what could be called the three ‘pillars’ of Rimac’s online communication. Mate Rimac’s figure, the company’s technological prowess, and audience involvement.

For the first one, the brand’s identity is consistently communicated throughout the various platforms. A really unique history with the founder racing his electrified BMW E30 and later on starting the company.

The last two instead are present in numerous other videos and posts. The majority of content published, as said, regards the engineering and technological side of the business. This is always carried out with an eye on audience engagement. Are frequent the Q&As with company employees replying to viewers, and references to work opportunities at Rimac and talent acquisition activities.

PART OF RIMAC’S MESSAGE

Another way in which the young company achieves that and raises its popularity among aspiring professionals is through online challenges and giveaways. Especially, in 2020 there have been a few initiatives, directed at designers and proposing them to come up with their own concepts for a helmet, or a futuristic car.

To this, is connected another theme. The company’s origin, and most of all the country's lifestyle. Croatia, in fact, has no other established automotive companies. This, according to Mate himself, has been one of the biggest challenges to overcome, but one that, as people said it would have become an obstacle, probably gained even more importance.

As a result, the attachment to the motherland and national identity is strong in the company’s image, and part of the communication is dedicated to that. The presence of such a prestigious brand (even if young) will surely help the popularity of Zagreb and Sveta Nadelja.

sveta nadelja*Sveta Nadelja

Last but not least, and particularly connected with the technology performance content is everything dedicated to the Concept One and even more to the C_Two. The whole development journey, coming now remarkably close to the official start of production, is detailed through posts and videos. They bring an extremely insightful wealth of information about the hypercar's different development steps, safety, and track testing. On more appropriate platforms such as Instagram, naturally, part of the content is just aimed at showcasing the beauty and design features of the cars.

This kind of content will most likely increase as soon as the C_Two reaches production and the first completed models are delivered to clients. Nico Rosberg who has become an ambassador for the brand in the meantime will surely be involved too, publishing on his platforms which have an even stronger following.

IN SHORT

Rimac’s social media communication is as unique as it reflects all the peculiarities that make this company successful and one-of-a-kind. From its founder and his unique story to the technology that is changing the industry and bringing in countless partners and clients, to being a proper gem in the Croatian landscape where no automotive tradition has ever been established before.

It will also be interesting to follow Rimac’s strategy in the coming months of 2021 as it will likely evolve as the journey of the company continues, with a first important step coming when the C_Two delivery starts.

Luxury Automotive Coachbuilders: Changing or disappearing?

  • Topic: Strategy & Marketing, Supercars Future

Coachbuilding is one of the most interesting aspects of the luxury automotive industry. It is deeply rooted in the origins of the automotive industrywhen automakers did not have production series models and clients went directly to coachbuilders for a personalised design to be fitted on the chassis produced by the automaker. Numerous beautiful classic models such as Alfa Romeo 6C GS, Aston Martin DB4 GTZ, and Ferrari 250 GT SWB by Pininfarina are still preserved today.

This started to change after World War II when the automotive companies started to produce standardised models and vertically integrated the coachbuilding function. This led to numerous companies going bankrupt, changing business models, or being acquired by automakers.

In the graph below 97 major coachbuilders have been reviewed and a few interesting trends emerge. First, how early the industry was born. The majority of the companies were already established before War World II, some even well before 1900. Second, the effect of vertical integration started in the 50s and throughout the 60s. Of all the companies reviewed, only 24 are still active today. Third, the relative stability of the sector from the 80s on, with a slight growth happening since the 2000s.

ACTIVE AUTOMOTIVE COACHBUILDERS BY YEAR (1945-2020)

graph coachbuilders

A previous article about the trend of increasing one-off supercars highlighted how more and more established luxury automakers are developing unique models working closely with the clients in a process that resembles very much the original birth of luxury cars at the beginning of the previous century. Naturally, the rationale behind these modern one-offs is very different and only addressing a current demand for a higher level of luxury and exclusivity by extremely wealthy clients. As a consequence, all of these companies develop unique designs based on their existing powertrains through in-house departments, with the exception of Bentley that revived Mulliner. The famous British coachbuilder was, in fact, acquired and merged by Rolls-Royce back in 1959.

So, how do modern coachbuilders operate? How has the industry evolved in the modern luxury automotive industry landscape?

HIGH DIVERSIFICATION

Several companies at one point started diversifying their businesses by expanding into other areas of transportation design. Others are becoming full-fledged design firms. Italian Italdesign, acquired by VW in 2010, and Pininfarina are two great examples. Since the 80s, the firms have become increasingly diversified up to today where they take on vastly different projects. From automotive to aviation, architecture, product design, and more.

battista davinci*Pininfarina Battista, Italdesign DaVinci

They have also shown plans for vertical integration. At the 2019 Geneva International Auto Show, Pininfarina unveiled the Battista, a full-electric hypercar based on the Rimac C_Two chassis, and Italdesign the DaVinci concept, a four-seater GT. Both were presented under the design studios’ brand name. On this side, Pininfarina seems even advanced with Battista on track for delivery in 2021 and an upcoming electric SUV to enter production in 2022.

While they are two of the most recognisable names in the sector, they are not the only ones to have adopted this strategy. Other examples of smaller names are Boniolo Advanced Design and Spadaconcept.

CHANGING BUSINESS MODEL

Many companies due to the automotive industry evolution since the 50s and up to the 80s and 90s had to reorient their businesses moving away from bespoke coachbuilding while remaining in automotive.

Some did not change completely. Swiss Tüscher and Dutch Veth & Zoon moved to bus and trucks and vans coachbuilding, respectively. Differently from the ones mentioned in the previous paragraph though they abandoned car designing and instead of diversifying they focused on specific transportation segments, in this case, commercial vehicles. Others like Fantuzzi, Graber, and Pourtout transitioned to classic vehicles restoration.

Bugatti Type 46 Veth and Zoon Faux Cabriolet 37270*Bugatti Type 46 Veth & Zoon byUltimatecarpage

Finally, Belgian D’Ieteren and British Martin-Walter became automotive dealership groups.

WHAT ABOUT THOSE STILL IN THE BUSINESS?

Even with the majority of companies in the business either disappearing or changing completely or partially their model, there are some that still continue to design exclusively unique or highly limited models and concepts.

The biggest name is surely Zagato. The Milan coachbuilding company standing now for over 100 years counts collaborations with pretty much every major luxury car manufacturer. The most important partnership is the one with Aston Martin that, even in the last decade, produced several highly limited vehicles. One above all the Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato series. Other names are either relatively new or just significantly smaller. These are the Italian firms Spadaconcept, Ares Design, Manifattura Automobili Torino, and Fioravanti, the Japanese Mitsuoka, and the Dutch Vandenbrink Design.

vanquish zagato*Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake

Interestingly, two names that ceased activities in the past have also been revived. One is Carrozzeria Castagna taken over by two independent entrepreneurs. The second is Mulliner which has become the bespoke operations division of Bentley under which the limited series Bacalar has been developed.

THE INDUSTRY’S FUTURE

Companies that still treat coachbuilding like it was at the origin of the automotive industry are very few. Additionally, all the major luxury automotive manufacturers have developed their own in-house design departments and taken charge of one-off or highly bespoke projects as well.

On the other hand, coachbuilders will have less competition, and with demand for higher exclusivity increasing, as highlighted in the previous article, those that manage to establish their names could become influential in the space. All the established companies have reached this status through important partnerships with automotive brands.

However, right now, the majority of exclusive coachbuilders are relatively new. Time will tell if this model can work for start-ups in today's market. If competing with automakers’ internal design departments is too difficult, the diversification adopted by traditional coachbuilders might be necessary.

Marketing Racing #8: Porsche Taycan Marketing and its Records

  • Brand: Porsche
  • Topic: Electric Vehicle Market, Marketing Racing, Strategy & Marketing

The Porsche Taycan has been a big deal for the industry since its first appearance as a concept under the name Mission E. It was the first long-standing established luxury manufacturer to start the production of an electric vehicle, which is something that very few do even today.

During its first year, Taycan has been a commercial success too, selling 20,015 units. It prominently entered Porsche’s lineup, exceeding the Boxster/Cayman 19,263 sales of 2019, which was a year of general strong growth. Additionally, as of today, outside of China, EVs have been mainly sold in the premium segment of the market. Mostly due to battery pack costs and customer habits.

For a while now, China’s customers, in fact, have seemed to be less concerned with maximum range and tend to favour more affordable cars instead, to move mainly in the city as highlighted in the Chinese Market Research.

In western countries instead, the range is generally considered one of the most important features for EVs and one of the main stages of competition between companies. And the trend is still partially unchanged, but with signs of balancing. Especially with the popularity of Tesla’s Model 3 in the EU and US. Tesla so far has been the dominant player in the premium-luxury EV segment. At least until Porsche’s entry.

2020 MAIN PREMIUM EV MODEL SALES

lkdn graph*Tesla reports Model S and Model X sales figures together
**Audi data accounting only for the first 9 months of the year
***New Data for Mercedes EVs coming on February 18th

Along with the good results shown in this graph, there are two important factors to keep in mind. The first is that except in its base version, Taycan is generally much more expensive than the competitors listed here (the new Tesla Model S and X Plaid come closer to it). Secondly, Model X, Audi E-Tron, and I-Pace are all in the small SUV or Crossover segment which is definitely more sought after these days. These two factors make the Taycan results even more impressive and more interesting the potential for the upcoming Cross Turismo.

This scenario is likely to change significantly in 2021 as a number of high-profile competitors have entered the market in mid to late 2020. Polestar 2, BMW iX3, Ford Mustang Mach-E to name a few.

Determined the Taycan noteworthy success, even within a competitive segment that is not the most popular nowadays, let’s have a look at how Porsche achieved this success. What kind of campaigns did Porsche employ for its first EV Promotion?

MODERN ONLINE MARKETING

Taycan like many other luxury vehicles, especially during 2020 with lockdowns and restrictions got a lot of visibility thanks to online reviews and driving tests. Since its release, in fact, it made the first page of pretty much every automotive social media outlet, not only for the novelty of being an electric Porsche but thanks to its characteristics. From the overall build quality far superior to that of its competitors to its driving capabilities.

Chris Harris, like others, in his review points out how the car driving dynamic and agility is superior to other electric vehicles and actually extremely close to the one in a regular Porsche ICE Sportscar despite its considerable weight.

Additionally, a consequence of the interest in the new drivetrain and technology started by Tesla’s success is that Taycan too caught the attention of a new audience that does not necessarily overlap with that of car enthusiasts. EVs have in fact grown in popularity among the tech fans community. Satisfying the needs and wishes of this new (and generally very young) audience can benefit Porsche by bringing in new potential clients and increasing brand loyalty.

These are crucial components of modern marketing for any luxury car. In the case of the Taycan though, there is more…

SOME UNIQUE MARKETING

I previously discussed the success of The Heist, the second most-viewed automotive video on YouTube, and a great example of the power of storytelling in automotive marketing that many other automakers are following. This is already quite a unique achievement and a display opportunity for Porsche.

The second one-of-a-kind initiative to promote Taycan has been realised in Seoul on the occasion of its launch in Korea. The show itself featured an extraordinary light show symbolising the futuristic look and technology employed for this car. What is even more surprising though, is that in the days leading up to the event, a lorry carried around through the city an installation with a 3D Hologram representing running horses. The idea comes from the name of the car which according to Porsche ‘can be roughly translated to mean soul of a spirited young horse’.

While very impressive, this is not the last unusual campaign organised by Porsche to push the EV to maximum visibility. So here comes the Guinness World Records.

On two separate occasions, Taycan achieved World Records for the longest drift with an electric vehicle and the highest indoor vehicle speed.

On the first, driving instructor Dennis Retera completed 210 laps of a 200 metres circle, for a total of 42,171 Kilometres covered in 55 minutes. This specific record served also to showcase the potential of the rear-wheel-drive Taycan, produced exactly to enhance the fun and feeling of a true sportscar.

The second record instead was set by racing driver Leh Keen reaching a top speed of 165.1 Km/h in an enclosed building. This time the AWD Taycan was used to maximise grip, acceleration, and crucially, deceleration, as the space available was limited by the Guinness World Record rules.

This was an important showcase of top performance. Complete trust in the vehicle’s capabilities on a tricky slick surface, allowed the driver to achieve the record on the first attempt.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

Even though from an everyday performance perspective these achievements might not seem to mean much, this is different for car enthusiasts and will likely prove to be a smart move. Proving that a good electric sportscar is more than just straight-line speed, might help to convince current luxury performance car buyers that generally meet EVs with a certain scepticism.

If all the rest was not enough, this will at least be another way to record the Taycan on the history pages.

Luxury Automotive Startups: What’s the recipe for success

  • Brand: Pagani, Rimac
  • Topic: Strategy & Marketing, Supercars Future

The luxury automotive segment is an extremely competitive niche, with just a few strong players and very high entry barriers. Over the last 30 years, many tried and very few succeeded. While electrification is partially lowering such barriers on the engine side, other aspects and services required from a modern vehicle are much more complex than before.

An electric motor, in fact, with fewer moving parts (around 20, against the combustion engine’s 2000, according to MES Insights and Drive electric) will be cheaper in terms of R&D. Superior costs for automakers so far might have included the battery packs, but with the increasing competition that too has decreased a lot.

EV BATTERY PACKS COST REDUCTION ($ PER KWH)

ev battery graph*Source:Statista

On the other hand, though, modern cars need a lot more attention on electronic components. Much of the competition has moved toward IoT, self-driving, and AI systems. Additionally, for a modern luxury car, there are two important considerations to make.

The first is that the fully electric car is not yet accepted by some buyers. The majority is uncertain or against this technology, so a new company might consider developing a powertrain based on internal combustion engine or at least hybrid technology, thus losing that ‘electric motor ease of development’ advantage. For this reason, some companies source their engines (as well as other components) from established manufacturers instead of producing them in-house.

The second is that a luxury car ownership experience is expected to come with a truly special andcustomer experience.

So, despite this new era for the automotive industry, it does not seem easier for start-ups to enter this market. But who are the new players and what do they need to succeed?

NEW ENTRANTS

Let’s have a look at some of the most interesting new companies trying to make it into this competitive niche between 2020 and 2021.

1. Automobili Estrema

The new company, founded in 2020 in the Italian motor valley, has just introduced its flagship full-electric high-performance car, Fulminea. In the land of V8 and V12 ICEs, Estrema brings innovation with a 2040 horsepower hypercar powered by 4 electric motors and a hybrid battery pack. It will in fact feature supercapacitors paired with solid-state cells. Fulminea will be produced in just 61 units.

This company is the vision of entrepreneur Gianfranco Pizzuto, already an early investor in Fisker Automotive in 2007, a precursor of the hybrid electric technology in automotive with the Karma and many years in the sector. With him, other experienced executives worked for important companies such as Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Nio.

2. Naran Automotive

The company founded in 2017, revealed its first car, Naran Hyper Coupe in late 2020. CEO and founder Ameerh Naran from Zimbabwe, grown with a strong passion for high-performance automotive aims at creating the most powerful and most beautiful cars in the world.

Naran's first attempt, the Hyper Coupe, a GT3 inspired vehicle powered by a 5L Twin-Turbo V8 producing 1048 hp, 1036 Nm of torque, and 1377 Kg of downforce. It will also feature hydraulic steering, four-way adjustable dampers, forged carbon-ceramic brakes, double-wishbone suspension, hybrid carbon wheels.

3. Vision Automobiles

This French start-up, founded in 2019, takes a different approach from the previous two. In their own words, the upcoming car is a ‘revolution’, and for good reason, it has been called…you guessed it, 1789. It takes in fact a different approach. It is built around a powertrain that will run on bio-methane. Much like those investing in E-fuels, Vision not only thinks the days of ICEs are not numbered but that they can become completely sustainable too.

This allows them to maintain all the advantages that this powertrain has over the electric one, such as weight and sound. 1789 is a track car inspired by the 24 Hours of Le Mans prototypes, and it is said that road-legal cars will only come later from the acquired expertise. Yet, on the company’s website, there is no mention of figures or performance. Instead, the focus is on the luxurious and bespoke nature of the vehicle and the driving experience it will offer.

Only from posts on social media, it is known that the 1789 will be powered by a Twin-turbo V8 that should produce over 1000 hp.

These are just three of the latest examples reported over others because they represent three vastly different approaches to the industry. However, there are many more compelling projects out there like the One by Elektron and the AP-0 by Apex both EV concepts scheduled for the next few years.

WHAT IT TAKES TO SUCCEED

The stories of success can be counted on one hand. Like the start-ups mentioned, three are the brightest examples that come to mind: Koenigsegg, Pagani, and Rimac.

Again, like the three mentioned above, these automakers too brought different approaches to the industry. So, have they satisfied specific needs in the sector? Did luck play a role or there is more?

ONE COMMON TRAIT

If there is one characteristic that they share is the presence of a strong and charismatic individual at the top. Each one of them with his own strong personality has become the de facto face of the company. Ever present in the brand’s marketing and communication as well as in the influence over the projects developed. Horacio Pagani with his concept borrowed from Leonardo Da Vinci of art and science going hand in hand, Christian Von Koenigsegg with daring technological innovation, and Mate Rimac with the forward-looking vision of the future of high-performance automotive.

UNIQUENESS

Going in order of seniority, Pagani was a big hit right from the get-go with its firstborn Zonda. Through the ‘80s, Horacio Pagani worked in Lamborghini and was a pioneer in the use of carbon fibre and composites materials. This was an important factor that distinguished him later, as the use of carbon fibre started to become common in sports cars in the mid-80s.

The Zonda was a success thanks to its beauty, distinctive design features that still maintains today like the four round headlights and the quad exhaust tips in the centre, and performance reached thanks to Horacio’s technical expertise and the deal with Mercedes-Benz which still today provides the special V12 engines for all their models. Finally, the obsessive attention to detail both inside and out gave it the almost-jewellery-piece status it has today.

Most importantly, after 20 plus years, Pagani has not only maintained each one of those unique features but greatly improved on every single one of them, making the Zonda a proper icon and its successor the Huayra a true piece of art, unrivalled as far as craftsmanship goes.

Koenigsegg instead established itself thanks to the focus on pure performance and technological innovation. With every new model, the Swedish company is right at the top, overshadowing its competitors with some incredible performance achievements.

Additionally, Koenigsegg takes pride in being one of the few, if not the only company to produce almost every single component in-house. One quote from founder Christian Von Koenigsegg on this topic epitomises the values around which the company is built. When asked if this decision brings advantages over its competitors he replies:

“For example, with the Regera, I don’t see any of the other established brands, daring to remove shifting of gears. It’s such a fundamental thing to take away from a sports car, that I think it’s only Koenigsegg that could make that decision. And I’m very confident about the decision […] We take more freedoms like that”.

Koenigsegg too like Pagani remains true to its values by improving every single time on its achievements, and bringing some new outrageous concepts to the table both in terms of technology and now also for sustainability, like with the Gemera in 2020.

Finally, Mate Rimac as a sign of the changing times was a pioneer in the development of full-electric hypercars. Inspired by both the previous examples he decided to follow them, but in his own way. Its business model, in fact, is extremely different. The young Croatian company is already a success, but not in terms of car sales per se. Despite the global praise, the company, so far, produced an extremely limited number of vehicles.

What distinguished it is its technological advancement that no one else had which brought them an incredible number of high-profile partners and clients. In its founder’s words:

In order to survive, we basically became, at the very beginning, a technology company […] that’s the only reason why we still exist today […] a little bit like the history of Ferrari, Enzo Ferrari had to build road cars to finance his race cars, I wanted to build road cars, but had the technology business to pay for that” because “looking at my big heroes, Pagani and Koenigsegg, they started at a time when it was much simpler to be competitive in the car industry […] for example at that time there was no infotainment, now just the infotainment is as complex as a whole car 60, 70 years ago”.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

The modern market is extremely competitive, but it is also highly diversified. It is difficult to excel even in a single segment as it will be likely already covered by another strong player. And, keeping in mind Rimac’s words, it could not be enough anyway, as they had to adopt a ‘hybrid’ business model to survive until now, while the two predecessors did not.

For a start-up to succeed there must be a perfect mix of personality, performance, design, technology, brand experience, and something more. Each of the successful companies quoted here pioneered an approach to the sector, a way of thinking about luxury supercars. That unprecedented and original vision, distinguishing an automaker from all the others is probably the ultimate factor necessary to make it in the luxury automotive industry.

One-off Supercars: What’s the next step for luxury automotive?

  • Brand: Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Rimac, Rolls-Royce
  • Topic: Strategy & Marketing

The automotive industry sales have been decreasing for 3 years now. The drop in fact has begun in 2018, way before the impact of Covid-19, mainly due to stagnation in the Chinese market. The same cannot be said for the luxury automotive segment though. Both 2018, and 2019 were positive years for the sector overall, and in 2020 despite the virus, it experienced a minor drop compared to the mass market.

With a sector in good health and several new millionaires every year the sales figures of luxury cars have grown. But this brings two relevant consequences.

First, it is crucial for manufacturers to maintain highly controlled numbers in order to preserve brand exclusivity. Second, “regular” luxury is not sufficient anymore. A while back, I touched on how the Customer Journey has become a necessary component of pretty much any luxury good, and this is especially true when it comes to luxury cars.

But along with extremely detailed customer services, there is another dynamic developing in the industry. Tailor-made one-off or few-off supercars.

Luxury car manufacturers are raising the bar with an increasing release frequency of these exclusive models. This time though, it is not about having the best performance of all (considering that all these cars are already capable of extreme performances) or being personalised in a unique way. This time there is more, and it is, as of now, the highest level of service imaginable by a luxury automaker.

In the early days of the automotive industry, it was common for wealthy clients to have a vehicle especially made for them by an OEM. Then it came mass production with concepts like economies of scale, so everything changed.

Now, instead, oftentimes luxury appears almost “too common” and having a car specified in a very original and creative way is not quite enough for some clients. So, luxury car companies are implementing programs and improving their capabilities, to take their clients on an even more unique journey by working together to design and manufacture their very own car.

one off few off programs*Includes only one-off or few-off projects developed working closely with clients or projects that started a similar wider program

THE TREND

From the graph above it is evident how Ferrari has been developing unique models for their clients for a while. From the first P4/5, it followed the 2008 SP1, with the name indicating the first model of the Ferrari Special Projects or Portfolio Coachbuilding Program. The Program has been started to bring back the experience of old days coachbuilding.

It is not surprising to see Ferrari being the first to embrace this kind of strategy. Not only they are one of the oldest companies in the space, but they have also been developing an extremely complex marketing mix whose example is being followed by other automakers in various instances.

The second trend observable in the graph is the overall increasing number of one-off or few-off projects. Much like bespoke personalisation programs, in the last decade, many companies claimed the intention to introduce their own highly bespoke division to produce unique models regularly.

McLaren’s MSO before Sabre had stated the will to move in this direction. Pagani too, which already produced an extremely low volume of cars, started introducing unique highly modified models for their wealthiest clients.

Additionally, over the last three years, more companies joined this exclusive club. Lamborghini released its second one-off SC20 again developed by a client working with Squadra Corse, after the SC18 Alston. In Aston Martin, the Victor could only be the firstborn of a project called Prototype Operations teased by Andy Palmer in 2017 during an interview for Road & Track. The then CEO claimed their intention to ramp this production up to two cars per year. Bentley too withMulliner and the super limited Bacalar (only 12 units scheduled) reintroduced its concept of bespoke coachbuilding.

SOME OBSERVATIONS

It will be interesting to see if this dynamic turns into a proper trend. As of now, it does seem the direction these automakers are moving toward. If so, it would represent an entirely new competition stage that could, in time, even change how “regular” luxury performance cars are perceived and how wealthy clients approach these brands.

If these projects become more frequent, it can be expected to see more and more clients requesting this kind of service. In turn, some OEMs could either decide to partially lower their production volumes to focus more on limited series (following Bugatti, Pagani, or Koenigsegg business model), or sell their “slots” for even higher prices, considering that these one-off cars already sell for several million each.

In this respect, market regulations and restrictions evolving in the coming years might play an important role too.

An interesting point of view comes from Mate Rimac.

In a recent interview, he draws a parallelism between the future of car ownership and horse ownership before the advent of modern vehicles. According to Rimac’s CEO, like horses were once the main mean of transportation and were substituted by tractors and cars, the same is bound to happen to cars leaving space to electric and autonomously driven ones.

As governments ban the sales of ICEs and, especially in big cities, the ownership of a vehicle becomes increasingly inconvenient, cars will eventually become a luxury for the few.

mate rimac

The ownership of the vehicle ‘to go from A to B’ will cease to exist. In his hypothesis, when cars will not be allowed to drive on the road anymore as it happens for horses even today, they will survive thanks to enthusiasts who will keep driving them on tracks or other designated locations.

While some assumptions might be debatable, and the role of modern cars in our society, as well as their intrinsic and symbolic values, are probably quite different from those of horses, Mate Rimac’s vision is worth mentioning as it could tie in with the one-off cars trend. If luxury sports cars become objects for an even smaller customer base, one-offs could become even more relevant within the brand strategy and this could be the beginning of something bigger for the future of the industry.
